Phil Mickelson was born in San Diego, California. He was raised there and in Scottsdale, Arizona. As a young boy, he learned to play golf watching his father play. In fact, that's how he learned how to play lef-handed. Even though Mickelson is right-handed, he mirrored his father's swing.
Mickelson turned professional in 1992 following his graduation from Arizona State University. His first major championship win came at the 2004 Masters, making him only the third golfer with a left-handed swing to win a major. Mickelson was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in May 2012.
