John Green

Birth Name:
John Michael Green
Best Known For:

"The Fault In Our Stars"

Short bio:

John Green was born in Indianapolis, IN on August 24, 1977 but moved around with his family to Michigan, then Birmingham, Alabama, and finally to Orlando, Florida. Green graduated from Kenyon College in 2000 with a double major in English and Religious Studies. After graduating from college, Green spent five months working as a student chaplain in a children's hospital while enrolled at the University of Chicago Divinity School (although he never actually attended the school). Believe it or not, Green intended to become an Episcopal priest, but his experiences of working in a hospital with children suffering from life-threatening illnesses inspired him to become an author. Green lived for several years in Chicago, where he worked for the book review journal "Booklist" as a publishing assistant and production editor while writing his book "Looking for Alaska." He has also critiqued books for The New York Times Book Review and created original radio essays for NPR's All Things Considered and WBEZ, Chicago's public radio station.Green later lived in New York City for two years while his wife attended graduate school.

Green's first novel, "Looking for Alaska", was published in 2005. The novel was awarded the annual Michael L. Printz Award by the American Library Association, recognizing the year's "best book written for teens, based entirely on its literary merit". His fifth book, "The Fault in Our Stars" was released in January 2012. The New York Times Best Seller list for children's books listed "The Fault in Our Stars" at number one for two weeks in January and February 2012. The novel has been made into a major motion picture and was released in the US on June 6, 2014. Also in 2014, Green was included in Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Green is also well known for his YouTube channels. In 2007 he launched the VlogBrothers channel, which he runs with his brother, Hank Green. Since then Green has launched events such as "Project for Awesome" and "VidCon" and created a total of 11 online series with his brother.

Dear John Green,
I’m Bea and I absolutely LOVE ‘The Fault In Our Stars’. Even though I have no personal experiences with thyroid cancer (or any cancer at all), your writing makes it incredibly easy to empathize with Hazel and understand what she is going through. As for Gus, he is my hero! You portray him as such an amazing guy and one who is perfect in every way for Hazel. I haven’t got much else to say other than a MASSIVE thank you for having written this book - it has changed the perspective in which i see things and the gravity of my own struggles (which are nowhere near those that Gus and Hazel experience!) I hope you’ll be able to see this message and reply because it would mean the world to me!
Another massive thank you,
Bea🍬
