Benedict Cumberbatch was born on July 19, 1976 in London, England to actor parents, Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham. He studied drama at the University of Manchester before training at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
Cumberbatch has had major roles in a dozen classic plays at the Open Air Theatre in Regent's Park, at the Almeida Theatre, Royal Court Theatre and the National Theatre since 2001. His film debut was in 2006 with a role in "Starter For 10". He also portrayed William Pitt the Younger in "Amazing Grace." Cumberbatch's most recent work includes the voice and motion-capture for both Smaug the Dragon and the Necromancer in "The Hobbit" and Khan Noonien Singh in "Star Trek Into Darkness."
